Port Power's first game at the MCGPower's First Game at the MCG

HISTORY

The Port Adelaide Football Club was formed in 1870 and joined the SAFA (South Australian Football Association) in 1877. SAFA became the SAFL (South Australian Football League) in 1907 and then the SANFL (South Australian National Football League) in 1927.

In 1990 Port Adelaide attempted to join the AFL (Australian Football League). This bid alienated and infuriated the other SANFL clubs and led to the formation of a composite side (Adelaide Football Club ) being admitted to the AFL.

On 4 June 1996, following a successful tender, Port Adelaide was announced as the 17th Team in the AFL for the 1997 season. With the subsequent demise of Fitzroy (merged with Brisbane to form the Brisbane Lions) 16 Teams were left in the AFL.

As Port Adelaide was unable to retain its Magpie emblem and colours it adopted the nickname of Port Power, and new colours of teal blue, black and white.
